Who Would You Choose? Your Tour 9

Who wants Jonathan Vaughters job in June? Picking your Tour De France team from this group is going to be pretty tough. Lets start with are you going to put your faith in Christian for GC and build a strong team around him? Are you going to go for a team that is going to deliver stage wins galore, two of the best sprinters in he world and one of the best one day riders. Who is in the lead out train? Who are your climbers? Do you give the rising stars Dan Martin or Jack Bobridge their first Tours? Or maybe Tommy D finds the form we all want him to. Who are the engines for the flats in the first week and will drive the bunch to chase down breaks? The Team Time Trial! What a team just for that.

  1. I would definitely leave the Irish rider off the roster. =)

  2. Why you gotta be like that….he has better results this season than most of the guys on both of those teams.

  3. IMHO, this isn’t a terribly difficult choice. There’s at least one I imagine isn’t on the radar (was in the past, but no longer), and a few that have agendas that might not line up with the ’11 TDF.

A lot can happen in the final run-up, which will also help logically cull the field.

The one reality I have a hard time considering seriously is a TDF without TH, but at this point I’d nearly hang a hat on the idea that it will be TF, not both sprinters in France.

  4. i’d give Martin lone leadership for GC at the Giro and Vuelta and save his Tour debut for 2012. Especially if the Giro shapes up to be a pure climbers race again (even more so than last year) that would be his best chance.

  5. My 9:
    Thor Hushovd
    Tyler Farrar
    Julian Dean
    Henrich Haussler
    Ryder Hystedal
    Johan Van Summeren
    Dan Martin
    David Miller
Christian Vande Velde (please don’t crash!)

    Sprint/green jersey leaders: Hushovd/Farrar
    Overall leaders: Hystedal/Martin

  6. The tour is one boring race, full of dopers. You realize everyone on the list above cheats…? I hope they cancel the event.

  7. I think it would be fair to say that a lot of the riders above are “clean” as in they have never been under suspicion. There are some riders here that I hope are a new generation with a different attitude (Martin and Bobridge) and an older reformed and committed generation (Miller). But you can’t just say the Tour is full of dopers, as these guys race all season in a lot of races. So why just cancel the Tour? So are you saying cancel competitive cycling? Since we are at it, that would also be the Olympics (all sports) and Pro Football and baseball and basketball… personally I prefer an innocent until proven guilty policy.

  8. CVV
    Haussler
    David Miller
    Thor
    Tyler Farrar
    Ryder
    Dan Martin
    Klier
    Martijn

CVV for support or leader depending on how Ryder is riding, Dan Martin could also step in…Old School T Mobile trifecta attack!
Then you also have Thor, HH, or Tyler for Green and sprint stages.
Klier and Martijn for domestique or the nice LONG break away

BOOM, JV here is your team!

  9. Gave this a bit more thought and realize it all depends on what they want to achieve at the Tour.

If their goal is to get as many stage wins as possible, then stack the roster with guys capable of doing this. I can picture Thor, Heinrich, or Millar getting into breaks and stealing the stage with a late move. Or save it all for a sprint finish with Tyler. Or chase KOM points with Martin or Danielson.

If they really want the yellow, then they need to build a roster to support that one guy in the high mountains and transition stages. Does Garmin even have riders on their roster that can do this? I look at past yellow jersey winners and they all had their lieutenants. Contador had Navarro. Armstrong had Chechu. LeMond had Robert Millar. (Did he? I can’t remember) Who can support VandeVelde or Hystedal in the high mountains?
