El Cyclista

France June 2008 | Photography Conor Brady

On a trip to the Pyrenees last summer we had the misfortune of hitting the Tourmalet on one of the worst days of the summer. It was covered in cloud, and rivers of rainwater ran down the roads to the top. The true scale of the task was disguised in mist. It was only when passing by the café at the top and looking through a gap in the clouds that you got a true sense of why this is one of the monuments of cycling.

  1. Uh oh, doesn’t work on IE! (Am I the ONLY person in the world left who uses IE…?)

  6. Conor,

Hmm, foggy atmospheric images of a breathtaking ride – these beautiful shot are making me feel a bit guilty for not riding in the rain today.

Mainly just wanted to say how much I enjoy the site. The interview with Stefan Bumbeck made me think of my brother Dave: he used to draw intricate sketches of bikes back in high school. Luckily he’s still driven by that cycling enthusiasm, only now he builds beautiful, high-end steel frame at Ellis Cycles.

    Keep up the solid work.

  8. Love these moody, atmospheric and wet shots…. gives some indication of the brooding majesty of this lump of rock. Am due to ride it (along with the rest of the etape/tour stage, although a month earlier) on June 19th. Reminds me of our ascent of Ventoux last October, which we did entirely in the mist… shame we didn’t get the views, but at least we avoided the heat… your shots here remind me of the sheer pain and joy. Thank you.
